UKTAG

United Kingdom Technical Advisory Group, a partnership of environmental and conservation agencies providing technical support for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive.

UKWIR

United Kingdom Water Industry Research: An organisation set up by the UK water industry in 1993 to provide a framework for the procurement of a common research programme for UK water operators on ‘one voice’ issues. UKWIR comprises 24 appointed water and sewerage companies in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Ultra-violet oxidation

A process using extremely short wave-length light that can kill micro-organisms (disinfection) or cleave organic molecules (photo oxidation) rendering them polarized or ionized and thus more easily removed from the water.

Ultraviolet (UV) treatment

Treatment of drinking water or effluent with UV rays to neutralise bacteria.

United Kingdom Water Industry Research (UKWIR)

Unsaturated Zone

The area above the water table where soil pores are not fully saturated with water.
