Visit to Yorkshire Water Advanced Thermal Conversion Facility

Date: 28th November 2017

Location: Yorkshire Water, Lower Brighouse WWT Works, Mirfield, WF14 0BS

Time: 1.30-4.30pm

Yorkshire Water Services (YW) Innovation Team has delivered a commercial and technical proof of concept asset for Advanced Thermal Conversion Gasification (ATC).  The process utilises sewage sludge and wood as fuel.  The plant has operated for 10,000 hrs and generated 3.2GWhrs electricity.

The result of 10 years of research and development is a commercially proven template at commercial scale. The process utilises an innovative approach with gasification at its heart.  The output of the process is a syn-gas,  that can be used to generate electricity and char.  Suitably scaled, the process has the potential to generate four times the renewable electricity generation to currently employed techniques for sludge treatment (anaerobic digestion).  It also reduces the risks of recycling sludge cake to agriculture.  The financial model, corroborated with live data, informs a positive EBITDA.

YW’s investment has also yielded the knowledge of how to specify and integrate the assets, ensure process and personal safety through operational and maintenance plans, asset and engineering standards, environmental compliance and, critically, delivered fuel specification criteria.

ATC Gasification provides a significant option for beneficial treatment of sewage sludge, offering excellent value for money for customers.  It will also make YWS operations more sustainable with exciting carbon benefits demonstrated through an assessment model developed by The Carbon Trust.

Site Visit

The site visit will begin with an introduction which will cover:

-         the project’s history

-         development of the pilot scheme

-         the technology employed

-         the results to date

-         its commercial viability

-         what you will see on the site tour

-         any questions

Visitors will then be split into small groups and given a tour of the plant lead by one of the project team.  There will then be a further opportunity for questions over coffee/tea.

Health & Safety

Please note that this visit will take place on an operational site and that that all visitors will need to comply with the YWS H&S requirements for the site.
