Webinar: How Could Anti-Microbial Resistance Impact the UK Water Industry?

INTRODUCTION 

This webinar explores how Anti-microbial Resistance (AMR) could impact the UK water industry and summarises some of the work that has been done to date around mitigating its overall impact.

AMR occurs when microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change in ways that make treatments ineffective. AMR is a major concern because drug-resistant infections can kill, spread to others, and impose huge costs on individuals and society.  AMR is estimated to be responsible for 700,000 deaths each year globally. If no action is taken, this is predicted to rise to 10 million each year by 2050, alongside a cumulative cost of $100 trillion.

The concentration of AMR driving chemicals and micro-organisms within environmental reservoirs is resulting in the development of resistance and the occurrence of antimicrobial resistant genes (ARGs). Resistance is transferred between micro-organism reservoirs either directly between humans and animals or disseminated throughout the environment by the water cycle.

AMR driving chemicals, resistant organisms and ARGs may enter the water cycle by methods such as industrial discharge, wastewater outfalls and storm water overflows; but also as a result of catchment drainage and overland flow from agricultural areas and aquatic farming.  The water industry is therefore critical in both addressing and preventing the rising occurrence and spread of antimicrobial resistance.
