Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs

The UK government department responsible for safeguarding our natural environment, supporting our world-leading food and farming industry, and sustaining a thriving rural economy. Our broad remit means we play a major role in people’s day-to-day life, from the food we eat, and the air we breathe, to the water we drink. Defra is a ministerial department, supported by 33 agencies and public bodies.

DWI Drinking Water Inspectorate

The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) was formed in 1990 to provide independent reassurance that public water supplies in England and Wales are safe and drinking water quality is acceptable to consumers.

Environment Agency

We are an Executive Non-departmental Public Body responsible to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Our principal aims are to protect and improve the environment, and to promote sustainable development. We play a central role in delivering the environmental priorities of central government through our functions and roles.

Natural Resources Wales

Natural Resources Wales brings together the work of the Countryside Council for Wales, Environment Agency Wales and Forestry Commission Wales, as well as some functions of Welsh Government. Our purpose is to ensure that the natural resources of Wales are sustainably maintained, enhanced and used, now and in the future.

OFWAT

Ofwat regulate and make sure that all water companies provide their customers with a good quality service at a fair price.

Water Industry Commission for Scotland

Water Industry Commission for Scotland (WICS) promotes the interests of water and sewerage customers in Scotland.
