Collaborative projects facilitated by WIF

Over the last year it has become apparent that the Environment Agency, regional water companies and many other key industry stakeholders believe that the UK water industry will only be able to tackle the future challenges facing the industry by collaboration across the entire industry.

This is seen to apply to both the shorter term challenges such as meeting capital efficiency targets in AMP5/AMP6 and skills shortages, and the longer term challenges such as those resulting from the impacts of climate change and an increasing population.

The Water Industry Forum has started to address these challenges by developing the concept of WIF Partner round table workshops at which we aim to identify and put in place actions to address these challenges through new collaborative projects.

To date the following collaborative projects have been initiated:

  • Exploration of asset standards and specifications

  • Development of a national infrastructure demonstrator programme

  • Understanding the true benefits of real time data

  • Development of a cross industry innovation portal for three water companies

  • Production of a draft “rolling 18 month work stream” with Ofwat

  • Skills shortages in the UK water industry

  • Application of space technology to the UK water sector.
