British Water and the Water Industry Forum to complete merger in April 2022

In July last year the Boards of British Water and the Water Industry Forum confirmed their intention to merge the two organisations, following strong support from both sets of members, and the passing of a formal merger resolution at British Water’s AGM.

Since then, the two organisations have been working closely together, finalising the many important details of the merger. These conversations have now been concluded and both British Water and the Water Industry Forum have announced that the merger will take effect during April 2022.

This week members of both organisations will be receiving further information by email about important aspects of the merger, such as a new, harmonised subscription model, and updates to the British Water website, to reflect the new, enlarged organisation.

The merger is set to deliver major benefits for members and the UK water sector, providing access to new, enhanced services and opportunities – and increased value for money. An explanatory brochure sent to all members last year summarised the compelling case for the merger, expressing confidence that the new, combined organisation will:

• enjoy increased authority, weight and impact, with a stronger voice to shape the future direction of the UK water sector

• demonstrate clear leadership in the national effort to tackle water challenges and capitalise on the many opportunities these present

• unite the geographic profiles of British Water and the Water Industry Forum, providing truly UK-wide coverage

• respond to comprehensive water sector research in which the great majority of respondents believed that greater collaboration and/or a ‘coming together’ of UK water membership organisations would be beneficial.

To revisit the background to this move, including our vision for the merged organisation and how WIF’s independence and neutrality is being ensured, take another look at our merger proposal document.
